At St John’s, the Physical Education (PE) Department aims to ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to participate in a variety of sporting disciplines to the best of their ability, within a safe and competitive environment. We aim to stimulate an interest in PE and to promote a positive attitude to health and fitness. Additionally, we aim to develop the skills of cooperation and participation through team games and fixtures, developing self-motivation for all pupils, with positive attitudes to competition and good sporting behaviour.

We offer a broad and balanced PE curriculum throughout the Senior School. Pupils in Upper 3 (Year 7) to Upper 4 (Year 9) are timetabled for two hours PE every week and in Lower and Upper 5 (Years 10 and 11) an hour.

As part of the curriculum, pupils play a range of team sports including football, rugby, volleyball, basketball and netball. During the summer, pupils play cricket and rounders, as well as athletics in preparation for our annual Sports Day, which is held at the athletics track at Basildon Sporting Village.

As well as team sports, pupils also enjoy trampolining, badminton, table tennis and dodge ball.

Physical Education GCSE
In Years 10 and 11 all students may choose to take GCSE Physical Education.

Our onsite sporting facilities includea Sports England specification Sports Hall, enabling indoor netball, basketball, hockey, badminton and cricket nets for practice. We have an outdoor netball/basketball court and a playing field for football, rugby and rounders.

With 8 acres of space and backing onto Lake Meadows St John’s pupils have a beautiful course for Cross Country practice around the park and lake during the winter months.

Additionally, our pupils visit the dry ski slope in Brentwood, Burstead Golf Club and the swimming pool in Lake Meadows.

We run a wide variety of Sports Clubs throughout the week. Most of our senior clubs run before school and after school and are open to pupils of all abilities, and not just those who represent the school at fixtures. This ensures that all pupils can experience the enjoyment of physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle.

At St John’s, we provide students with an opportunity to represent the school at fixtures and competitions. We enter ISA competitions against other East Anglian independent schools. In most sports where we run a club we enter competitions and matches which are played at a variety of levels, ranging from a friendly level of competition, to Regional and National competitions. Recently, we have attended the Independent Schools Association (ISA) Cross Country Regional Competition, ISA Swimming Gala at the Olympic Park Swimming Pool and have competed in netball and football competitions.

Pupils also compete in school House competitions including House Skiing, House Badminton and House Table Tennis, House Athletics, House Football, House Netball and House Cross Country.

Whole school ski trips abroad are run each year. The trip usually takes place in January and next year, our pupils will be going to Austria.
